How to play

Language teachers and adult learners
15–20 minutes

Teach the word set

Review meaning and pronunciation before playing. Replace words outside the lesson level, and print cards plus the caller list. Learners should know the difference between overlapping terms such as luggage and suitcase.

Choose words or clues

Draw a word slip and either say it aloud or give an unambiguous definition. Keep the original slip as the answer key. Let learners ask for a repeated clue before moving on.

Use the winning words

Check a row, column, or diagonal against the called words. Ask the winner or their group to use two of those words in a short station, airport, or hotel dialogue.

For definition practice, prepare clues before the lesson instead of improvising ambiguous answers.
Replace the English list with your target language; text can use any script.

Before you print

Are definitions printed automatically?

No. The caller list contains the same words as the cards. The teacher prepares spoken clues separately if using the definition variation.

Can beginners use this template?

Use a smaller 3 × 3 grid, teach the selected words first, and call the words directly. The default list is not tied to a formal proficiency level.

How do I save my cards as a PDF?

Choose A4 or US Letter, then use Download PDF to save your set. Print opens your browser’s print dialog instead. Your latest draft is saved in this browser when storage is available; download a PDF to keep a separate copy or send the cards to someone else.
