How to play

English vocabulary learners · 10–20 minutes

Introduce the vocabulary

Check that learners have met the words before the game. Replace unfamiliar items or regional terms. The default 4 × 4 card has 16 word squares and no free center.

Call a word or a clue

Print the cards and a caller list. Draw slips randomly. Say the food word, use it in a sentence, or give an agreed clue such as “a yellow fruit you peel.” Keep clues unambiguous.

Check and use the words

Players mark matching words until they have a row, column, or diagonal. Check the line against your called slips, then invite learners to use one of the words in a sentence.

A 3 × 3 grid is useful for a smaller vocabulary set; retain at least eight words with a free center.
Use paper counters or pencils. The activity does not require handling or tasting food.

Before you print

Does the set include food pictures?

No. These are text cards for practicing written vocabulary. You can show your own pictures while calling if that supports your lesson.

Can I teach another language?

Yes. Replace the words with the language you are teaching. This template’s instructions are in English, and the editor accepts other writing systems.

How do I save my cards as a PDF?

Use Print / Save PDF, then choose Save as PDF in your browser’s print dialog. Choose A4 or US Letter in the editor first, and turn off browser headers and footers. Reloading or leaving this page clears your edits, so save your PDF before you go.
