How to play

Beginning English readers · 5–15 minutes

01

Use words already introduced

Review the starter list and keep or replace words to match your lesson. This is a general list of common words, not a labeled curriculum or a reading-level assessment. The starting grid is 3 × 3.

02

Model the first turn

Print a card for each learner and the item list for yourself. Draw a word slip, say the word clearly, and show how to find and mark it. Give learners time to look at every square.

03

Read the winning line

Keep calling without replacement. When a learner completes a row, column, or diagonal, invite them to read the words in that line with support as needed. Clear the counters for another round.

Before you print

Is this a Dolch or Fry word list?

No. The starter words are a general selection. Paste in the specific list you are teaching if you need to follow a particular sequence.

Can I turn off the free center?

Yes. Clear the center-square option. A 3 × 3 card without a free center needs at least nine distinct words.

How do I save my cards as a PDF?

Use Print / Save PDF, then choose Save as PDF in your browser’s print dialog. Choose A4 or US Letter in the editor first, and turn off browser headers and footers. Reloading or leaving this page clears your edits, so save your PDF before you go.
